A West Village and Meatpacking Day Itinerary
A Greenwich Village day built for walking, lingering, coffee, old brick, and one good table. It borrows the pace of a European city without pretending Manhattan has stopped being Manhattan.
Route: Abingdon Square, West 12th Street, La Cabra, Barrow Street, Buvette, the High Line, and the Waverly Inn.
Walking at a glance
- Distance: 2.8 miles on foot
- Areas: West Village, Meatpacking District, and Greenwich Village
- Focus: Cobblestones, preservation, specialty coffee, and light bistro dining
8:30 AM: Abingdon Square Park
Start at Abingdon Square Park, one of New York's oldest public spaces. Take in the neighborhood's low-rise brick townhouses and its quiet morning routine.
9:30 AM: Coffee at La Cabra
Walk east along West 12th Street and take a short detour to La Cabra on East 9th Street. Order a cardamom bun and a filter coffee.
11:00 AM: Cobblestones and townhouses
Head back west through St. Luke's Place and Barrow Street. These blocks offer federal-style townhouses, cobblestone paving, mature trees, and the lower-scale streetscape that makes the neighborhood feel distinct.
1:00 PM: Lunch at Buvette
Stop at Buvette on Grove Street for a light lunch. The croque monsieur, shaved jambon, and compact room fit the mood of the walk.
3:30 PM: The High Line
Walk northwest to Gansevoort Street and enter the High Line. Continue north along the former rail line, where industrial ironwork, planting, and newer architecture sit tightly together.
6:00 PM: The Waverly Inn
Finish at the Waverly Inn on Bank Street. Its covered garden room makes a good final stop before walking the tree-lined West Village streets at dusk.
