NYC Tofu Shops

A ranked list of places to buy tofu across New York City, from high-volume pan-Asian retailers to small-batch traditional makers.

Top Picks

H Mart (34-51 48th St, Long Island City, Queens): The most reliable option for broad tofu selection. High-volume pan-Asian turnover means fresh stock. Multiple locations across the city.

Sunrise Mart (SoHo): Japanese tofu-type breadth. Worth knowing if you’re in lower Manhattan.

Fong On (Chinatown, Manhattan): In-house small-batch production plus wholesale. If you want tofu made on-site, this is the place. Historic Chinatown operation.

Sun Hing Lung Ho Fun: Factory-style tofu and rice roll production. Less of a retail experience, more of a working production operation.

Notes on the Category

H Mart dominates the convenience end of this market. If you need tofu reliably, any H Mart works. The question is whether you want to seek out something more interesting.

Fong On is the answer to that question in Manhattan. Small-batch, traditional methods, Chinatown location. It’s the kind of place that’s been doing this for decades and doesn’t need to advertise.

For Japanese-style silken and soft varieties, Sunrise Mart is the most consistent option downtown.

This list will be updated as I work through more of the city.
