NYC Restaurant Recommendations

A running list of places I like. Mostly for execution, balance, and things done the right way.

Bun Haus
What I like it for: A properly fried chicken sandwich. Crispy, juicy, not fussy. The potato roll matters and they get it right.
Where: Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Allan’s Bakery
What I like it for: Caribbean pastries, especially savory ones. Friendly service and a neighborhood feel. Easy stop.
Where: Lower East Side, Manhattan

Thai Diner
What I like it for: The breakfast sandwich. Chewy roti, great sausage, and chili crisp that actually carries flavor. Fun but still serious food.
Where: Nolita, Manhattan

Ha’s Snack Bar
What I like it for: Thoughtful small plates and strong appetizers. French Vietnamese ideas done with care. Cozy room, good energy.
Where: Lower East Side, Manhattan

Bar Goyana
What I like it for: Consistently good Brazilian food. Great coxinha, solid stews, balanced drinks. Reliable and well priced.
Where: East Harlem, Manhattan

Hay Hay Roasted
What I like it for: Sichuan style noodles and roasted meats. Bouncy noodles, spicy sauce, fast service. No nonsense.
Where: Chinatown, Manhattan

Kazi Halal Cart
What I like it for: Simple, well seasoned chicken gyro. Fast, generous, dependable.
Where: Gramercy, Manhattan

Zen Sushi Omakase
What I like it for: Excellent fish and rice, fair pricing, calm pacing. Nothing flashy, just very good sushi.
Where: Lower East Side, Manhattan

EIM Khao Mun Kai
What I like it for: Hainanese chicken rice done properly. Tender chicken, fragrant rice, great sauces. Comfort food that holds up.
Where: East Village, Manhattan

Al-Andalus
What I like it for: Incredible vegetarian tasting menu value. Twelve dishes for around $50 that actually feel generous and celebratory. Bold North African flavors and great pacing.

Shinzo Omakase
What I like it for: High-skill sushi without the stiffness. Excellent fish, standout smoked mackerel and sablefish, and a ridiculous wagyu scallop uni toro roll. Fun 90s music keeps it relaxed.

Corner Bistro
What I like it for: Classic burger and tots. Juicy, no nonsense, casual room that works for an easy night out.
Where it is: East Village

Grand Street Pizza
What I like it for: Proper NYC plain slice. Thin, chewy, savory cheese. Quick in and out spot.
Where it is: Lower East Side

Yumsem Eats
What I like it for: Reliable Korean comfort food for pickup or delivery. Good portions, solid kimbap, efficient service even if a little curt.
Where it is: East Village

East Harbor Palace Dim Sum

All the food was exceptional with lots of variety. I found this is be a heartwarming place for local families to enjoy the cuisine from home. It’s chaotic and cramped in the best way possible. The service is efficient and lightening fast. They will ensure you don’t leave hungry. that’s for sure!
