Day 1: Arrival
Afternoon
Check in after 4pm. Walk the 60 feet to the water. That's your view for four days.
Late PM
Drive 3 miles north to Castle Rock ($1/person, 15-min climb, full Straits view). Then Father Marquette Memorial waterfront walk for the bridge at sunset.
Evening
Clyde's Drive-In for dinner (since 1949, ~$10/person). Light the firepit at the water's edge. Early night — big island day tomorrow.
Tonight
Buy tomorrow's ferry tickets now before you forget. Arnold Line, online.

Day 2: Mackinac Island
9am
Pack the cooler. Walk to the Arnold Line dock. Take the 9–10am ferry. Bring your own bikes if you have them.
Mid-AM
Rent bikes at the dock. Ride the full M-185 perimeter (8 miles, flat, car-free). Picnic at British Landing halfway around.
Afternoon
Return bikes. Interior trails to Arch Rock → Sugar Loaf → Skull Cave. All free. 90% of tourists never find them.
Late PM
Fudge sampling on Market St (every shop gives free samples). Beer at Horn's Bar (est. 1859, workers' spot). Evening ferry back.

75-ft limestone pillar and a cave from the 1763 Pontiac War. Unsigned interior trails. Nobody goes here.

Day 3: Explore
Morning
Mystery Spot (1 min from cabin, ~$10). Then kayak from the cabin beach before 9am while the water is calm.
Midday
Brevoort Lake — 22 miles west on US-2. Clear inland lake at 68–72°F. Where Upper Peninsula locals actually swim. Free walk-in beach.
Afternoon
Drive the M-119 Tunnel of Trees toward Cross Village — 20 miles of old-growth canopy arching over Lake Michigan bluffs. Go both directions.
Evening
Dinner at Legs Inn (Cross Village) — Polish roadhouse on a Lake Michigan bluff, ~$16/person. Best meal of the trip.

Day 4: Your Call
Option A
Return to the Island
Fort Mackinac, Butterfly House, slower hiking. More relaxed when you know the layout.
Option B
Beach Day
Swim, grill, sit in the chairs, watch freighters. Walk to Deer Ranch (15 min, ~$6).
Tonight
If clear: drive 45 min west to Headlands Dark Sky Park (free). Milky Way visible naked-eye. Bring blankets.
Worth the drive
The aurora borealis is occasionally visible at this latitude in June. Check the forecast.

Day 5: Checkout
Morning
Last walk to the water. Coffee on the shore. Check out by 10:30am.
Drive home
Cross the Mackinac Bridge south (~$4 toll). Five miles of suspension cable. On a clear morning the island is visible to the east the whole way across.
On the way south
Stop at Clyde's Drive-In one last time for pasties to go. US-2 west along Lake Michigan is a beautiful drive if you have time.

Past British Landing Nature Center. Rocky limestone ledge entry. Where island workers swim on days off.

The Car Ban · 1898
It was a horse-protection ordinance, not environmentalism
Resort owners banned cars because the noise frightened horses used by wealthy guests. An accident of equine property rights that shaped the island forever.
Sociology
"Fudgies" — what workers call you
~3,000 seasonal workers (mostly J-1 visas) run the island. They call tourists "fudgies." Not affectionate. The Grand Hotel ($800+/night, $10 to walk the porch) is a 5-min walk from the employee dorms.
Fur Trade · 1780–1834
John Jacob Astor became America's richest man here
Every beaver pelt destined for Europe passed through these straits. When silk hats replaced fur ones, the island pivoted to tourism in a single generation.
