The Temperature Delta

Dressing for a summer internship in NYC requires managing extreme temperature differentials. The subway platforms and streets will exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit with high humidity, while the corporate office will be aggressively air-conditioned to 65 degrees. You must utilize a modular wardrobe.

The Commute Strategy

Never wear your suit jacket or blazer during the commute. Carry it in a garment bag or neatly folded over your arm. Many interns commute in athletic sneakers and change into formal dress shoes or heels immediately upon entering the office lobby. Keep your formal shoes stored under your desk overnight if the firm permits it.

Industry Standards

• Investment Banking & Law: Traditional business formal remains the standard. Men require lightweight wool suits (navy or charcoal) and ties. Women require conservative suits, tailored dresses, or blouses with blazers. Linen is prone to wrinkling and should be avoided in client-facing environments.
• Tech & Startups: The standard is "smart casual." Clean sneakers (e.g., Common Projects or simple white leather), dark denim or chinos, and unbranded polo shirts or blouses. Do not interpret "casual" as athletic wear or shorts.
• Consulting & Advertising: Business casual is the norm. Slacks or chinos with a button-down shirt. Blazers are required for client meetings but removed for desk work. Ensure all garments are professionally pressed; wrinkles project operational sloppiness.
